Meet Jamey Bradbury (by Cassandra, Axelle and Ronan)

Last friday, we met Jamey Bradbury, a writer from Alaska who wrote The Wild Inside. Jamey Bradbury is born in 1979 in Midwest. She was a receptionist, an actress, and a volunteer before becoming an author, even if she still has a day job.

She has good relationship with her mother, so she was inspired by this relationship to write the similar relationship between Tracy and Tracy’s mother.

Tracy is the main character of her book, she’s a girl attracted by wilderness and she can’t do without hunting into the woods.

What’s more, Jamey Bradbury was inspired by vampirism and that’s why in the story, Tracy acts as if she were a vampire, and she can feel emotions when she bites someone. We find again the connexion between a mother and her daughter because if Tracy has to bite people to be in their minds, her mother had the same power and she gave it her.

To write her book, Jamey Bradbury was inspired by Stephen King and John Irving because she really likes dark atmosphere which is present in their books. She was also inspired by Alaska to write her book because she has chosen to live there.

We have really liked this meeting and we hope that you will buy and enjoy the book, surely if you like thrillers

A meeting with Jamey Bradbury

by Peter, Alexander, Orlane and Anael

This afternoon, we had the opportunity to go to Lyon to meet Jamey Bradbury to talk about her first novel called
« The wild Inside ».

Jamey Bradbury is one of the newest authors of fiction, thriller and horror stories of our times ! She was born in the Midwest in Illinois and she’s 40 years old. Since she was young she felt like writing was her best way to express herself, and that she was meant to be a writer in the future. Jamey said she has always been such a warm person and for that reason, she decided to go on voluntary work in Alaska for 9 months. Jamey claims having loved Alaska so much that she decided to stay living there and it’s where she has been living the past 16 years. The first time the author was sure that she wanted to be a writer, was when she was still on primary school and her teacher gave her a blank book and asked her to write a story and to illustrate it… Jamey loved the idea and quickly realized her huge talent to imagine stories !

The wild inside  » is a fiction novel based on a teenager’s life which seems to be filled with a lot of adventure, danger and horror moments. The main character is named Tracy Petrikoff and she is fascinated by the wildling. She’s a great huntress who wants to become a musher like her beloved father. However, Tracy is cursed… She has a particular way of eating her preys…

During her interview, Jamey Bradbury claimed that Tracy is indeed a strong role model when it comes about being a woman in the Alaska and a gifted huntress. “ I like to go on creating a lot of problems to my main characters and then see how will I be able to solve all of them ”, she said in order to explain why is Tracy surrounded by so many troubles. One particular aspect about Jamey’s writing style, is that she does not use only a single literary style but many, at the same time, so that her story can be a unique and authentic piece of art.

One fact that you should probably learn about Jamey Bradbury is that, she does not prepare any writing – plan before beginning a book. “ I know that if I do that, I’ll loose the interest on writing it because I’ll be knowing how it ends before I even start .”, and for that reason she took 4 years in order to write her first book and to sculpt her writing – style. “ Now that I’ve finally found my way of writing a book, I hope this next one will take me less time to finish. ”

We can say that Tracy in wild  becase she was born and grew-up with her dogs. His main occupations are the dog race and especially go hunting in the forest.

We also learn in this book that Tr acy inherited a gift from her mother. She would be able to drink the blood of the animals that she hunts to know their thoughts. She also try this gift on humans to fell their thought.

Initially, Jamey thought that she was going to write a horror story, but in the end it is not case. But we understand one thing wich is very important ! We understand that Jamey gave a part of his personality to Tracy. But beware compared to other writers, who see themselves in their characters, Jamey does not fell like Tracy. Jamey Bradbury : The Wild Inside  by Laurine André and Florine Vallas, 4/8/19

We met Jamey Bladbury, a young writer, during the international festival of Lyon, on the march the 30th, and she told us a little more about her life and her novel : The wild Inside.

Jamey was born in 1979 in the state of Illinois in the Midwest. She has always read a lot of books and has always loved telling stories as well.

Despite the fact that she hated school, she graduated from high school and college, then she started some voluntary work across the country.

First she worked for 1 year in Illinois and then in Alaska.

She was supposed to stay only 9 months but she fell in love with the way of living in Alaska and she decided to stay. Indeed she discovered a new perception of life, closer to nature.

In Alaska, Jamey discovered the musher’s world and a simple life.

People always respect the beauty of the world. Moreover, she lives next to beautiful landscapes which inspired her for her novel. Another source of inspiration for Jamey was the famous writer, Stephen King.

But it was her first novel so she discovered how to write effectively:

She « Let the characters go wherever they want to go ». Indeed, she didn't make a plan of what she wanted to write, she just took a lot of time, and let the magic happen...

4 years after, the book is here!

The story takes place in Alaska where a young girl named Tracy lives at the edge of the woods with her family. Tracy is a very rebellious teenager who has always lived with her dogs, in the wilderness. At one point she discovered that she is different from the other kids : she has the ability to feel the thoughts and feelings of people and wild animals by tasting their blood.

Jamey explained that she is very different from Tracy: «  I’m unable to live like Tracy », but from a social point of view, in her teen years she wanted to be independent as Tracy, she wanted to break the rules : «  Even at 5 years old, I’d wanted to do things by my own, I told my mom to let me be ».

The representation of Tracy’s personality is a way of breaking gender stereotypes like hunting and dogs sledding which are considered as « masculine activities ».

Jamey said that we have all a part of us that is masculine and another that is feminine.

This book talks about all the ambiguous limits that can be in life, thanks to an original story full of twists.

If you haven't bought The wild Inside yet, go and do it because Jamey is currently writing her second novel that will be surely even better than the first one...
